No. This misconception comes because some members of the Church practiced polygamy during the 1800’s. Why did they do it? Because God (through the prophet) told them to. Why did they stop? Because God told them to. In 1890 President Wilford Woodruff issued a manifesto that officially stopped the solemnizing of plural marriage in the Church (See Official Declaration #1).
